Professor Andrew CHAN Chi-fai
Chairman, Consumer Council


        Professor Andrew CHAN Chi-fai, aged 46, was born in Hong Kong. In 1977, Professor CHAN received his first degree in Business Administration from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and was later conferred in 1993 with a Doctor of Philosophy by the same University. Before this, he was awarded in 1979 a Master degree in Business Administration by the University of California, Berkeley USA.

        Before joining the CUHK, Professor CHAN spent a number of years working in the business sector. He is now the Associate Dean of Business Administration in CUHK and Director of MBA programmes doing lecturing and research work in marketing and sales management. In his early years, Professor CHAN played a significant part in the writing of several books including "Advertising in Hong Kong" and "Hong Kong Enterprise Environment and Management". He was also the sole and joint writer of many other publications such as "Business Ethics: Theory and Cases" and "Marketing Wisdom". Apart from dedicating to academic research, Professor CHAN has abundant consultancy experience in marketing giving a hand to assisting cross-national enterprises and business concerns both in Hong Kong and China to improve and enhance marketing management and overall competitiveness.

        In January 1997, Professor CHAN was appointed by the SAR Government as a Member of the Consumer Council and later on 16 September 1999 Chairman of the Council. His main task in this role is to steer and co-ordinate the work of the Council focusing on fair trade and other key issues relating to competition. Apart from this, Professor CHAN is actively involved in other public services such as, just to name a few, External Examiner, School of Professional and Continuing Education of the University of Hong Kong and the Open University of Hong Kong; Member of the Quality Tourism Services (QTS) Council; Member of the Investor Education Advisory Committee of the Securities & Futures Commission; and the Director of Hong Kong Mortgage Corporation.
